Ever since the mid 1970s Thermal Label printer which include both direct Thermal Label printer and thermal transfer are available for public use. This first company to have launched a bar code label printer was Sato. These days there are a lot of options available to print the labels, like in jet, laser, and impact printer. Even though most of the labels present in the market are monochrome and some are single color or pre multicolored labels, but still the Thermal Label printer is considered the best according industry standards.

The bar codes that are composed spaces and lines are made to be scanned fast and cleanly by the bar code reader. Most of the bar code printers print with the tiny dots that are of square in shapes, which have the straight edges that the bar code scanner reads. The majority of the Thermal Label printer that are in existence give 203 dots per inch whose resolution is low, but it works for most of the label printers. 203 dots per inch equals to eight dots per millimeter and 305 dots per inch equals to 12 dots per millimeter. Therefore, 305 dots per inch would give a good result for label formatting. Nowadays few of the printer companies are giving 400 dots per inch and lately 609 dots per inch print resolution has been introduced.

The Dominance of Thermal Label printer over other printing technologies:-

Cost

The price of a Thermal Label printer is as low as 300 dollars, and the replacement of the print head may cost around 15 dollars. The industrial printers would cost somewhere around 1500 dollars.

Media Options and Cost

The papers that are required for the printing process are also very cost-effective even if you include a transfer ribbon in it. A thermal transfer printer can run paper, film or foils when they are paired with a good transfer ribbon. This does not require any in jet or a laser pre treatment. A thermal transfer, which is imprints of resin ribbons in them, is reliable. Such printers have a role form or a folded fan stacks of media labels. A number of adhesives can also be used on a Thermal Label printer.

Speed

The newly launched printers have the capacity to print up to 10 inches per second. Not just this the old printers can even print up to 4-6 inches per second. The Thermal Label printer are also the fastest to print the first label.

Durability

Most of the model printers that have been used in the industries will work for a decade or even more than that.

Connectivity Options

The USB has now become a standard requirement, which has replaced the Electronics or the Parallel connections. The serial is also an option with a lot of printer models. The Ethernet connectivity has also become popular since the companies that are operating several printers would easily assign each of the printers very own IP address and keep a check on their network.
