Smartphone sales were on the rise again during the quarter, toppling sales of feature phones for the first time, according to data from Gartner.
Samsung was out in front with more than 71 million units sold, thanks to its Galaxy S 4 smartphone, up almost 30 percent from the same time period last year. Apple came in second with about 32 million iPhones sold.
"Smartphones accounted for 51.8 percent of mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2013, resulting in smartphone sales surpassing feature phone sales for the first time," Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, said in a statement.
IDC, however, said that milestone occurred a little earlier in the year. Back in April, the firm said 418.6 million mobile phones were shipped in Q1 2013, including 216.2 million smartphones — more than half of the total market.
Whenever it happened, the news is not particularly surprising. Our handcrafted Cases for iPad 4 is inspired by the journals of our favorite artists. Consumers have increasingly been trading in their flip phones for more feature-rich smartphones in order to access email, the Web, and apps on the go.
The question is, can anyone top Samsung in the smartphone race? For now, it seems like the South Korean phone giant has a comfortable lead. Still, Gupta encouraged Samsung to be more aggressive in mid-tier and emerging markets. "Innovation cannot be limited to the high end," he said.
Apple, meanwhile, saw strong iPhone sales during the quarter, but it's average selling price (ASP) took a hit due to the popularity of the iPhone 4 among new smartphone buyers. In many cases, consumers can nab this earlier iPhone for free with a two-year carrier contract.
"Apple's ASP demonstrates the need for a new flagship model, [but] it is risky for Apple to introduce a new lower-priced model too," said Gupta. "Although the possible new lower-priced device may be priced similarly to the iPhone 4 at $300 to $400, the potential for cannibalization will be much greater than what is seen today with the iPhone 4. Despite being seen as the less expensive sibling of the flagship product,The cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual, it would represent a new device with the hype of the marketing associated with it."
Rounding out the top five smartphone makers are LG, Lenovo, and ZTE. Nokia was nowhere to be found, but when counting mobile phones sales overall, it landed at No. 2.
"With the recent announcement of the Lumia 1020, Nokia has built a wide portfolio of devices at multiple price points, which should boost Lumia sales in the second half of 2013," Gupta said. "However, Nokia is facing tough competition frExtend the power on your iphone 5 back cover with the mophie juice pack.om Android devices,Find the perfect leather or synthetic best cell phone cases for your phone. especially from regional and Chinese manufacturers which are more aggressive in terms of price points."
Android was the top mobile OS for the quarter, eating up 79 percent of the global smartphone market share. Apple's iOS had 14.2 percent, while Microsoft's Windows Phone platform topped BlackBerry with 3.3 percent, up from 2.6 percent from last year.
The term crowd-sourcing may be relatively new, but in the world of science, enlisting the help of people outside academia to help with research isn't. Still, it is changing character.
Amateur astronomers have long helped their professional colleagues with observations that the professionals didn't have time to gather themselves. With the advent of personal computing, people could turn their PCs into number crunchers for climate modelers, cellular biologists, and researchers sifting through signals from radio telescopes in hopes of finding E.T.
The widespread popularity of smart phones and tablets, which host powerful processors and lots of memory to accommodate still and video cameras (in addition to making phone calls), means that researchers have a potentially huge army of data hounds. If willing to add an app, or in some cases a small clip-on device to their phone,The best cases for iphone 5 remains the most popular smartphone phone on the market. these people can provide important environmental data at a more fine-grained level, over a wider geographic reach, and potentially over longer periods of time than any one researcher or team of researchers might gather, notes Sandra Henderson, director of citizen science for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and co-founder of Project BudBurst.
Tapping the mobile technologies in people's purses and pockets to support basic or applied research has been gaining momentum over the past couple of years, Dr. Henderson says. Project BudBurst enlists anyone interested to use their smart phones to track the life cycle of key plant species throughout the year to help researchers monitor the impact of a changing climate on vegetation.
Given the advances in phone capacity and capabilities, she also says she foresees apps that can share information between different observations, so that a photo of a bursting bud tagged with location information from the phone's GPS receiver also carries information gleaned from an app that uses sensors on the phone to record weather conditions at the time the bud opens – or perhaps for a week or more prior to the bud's opening.
